	About the Coordinator Ashok K. Chawla Chief Scientist & Head Translation Division CSIR-NISCAIR, New Delhi As on 14 November 2015
With degrees in Botany and Japanese and extensive research on translation needs, various aspects of translation & terminology studies, translation techniques, machine translation and machine-aided translation, Prof. Chawla currently serves as Chief Scientist and Head of Translation Services Division at the National Institute of Science Communication and Information Resources (CSIR-NISCAIR).
Prior to joining as Scientist at CSIR-NISCAIR in 1983, he worked in steel industry before his short stint at University of Delhi as Lecturer. In addition to his routine roles at NISCAIR, he conducts the On-going Translation Training Program, teaches translation at Jawaharlal Nehru University as Visiting Faculty and is a Visiting Professor & Academic Advisor at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU), Japan. He has done his research in Japan as Mombusho Scholar and as Fellow of the Japan Foundation.
Having translated over 20 books from Japanese to English, written three books, many research papers and contribution as a columnist, he has in-depth experience of trans-cultural communication through translation and interpretation in various fields ranging from automobiles to space, chemical to pharmaceutical, mechanical to civil, social sector to Japanese Management, patent to specifications and state-of-art reports to literature translation. Known for his professional skills and expertise as Indo-Japan relations, he has served as a professional and official interpreter for high-level Policy dialogs, Head of State meetings and other sensitive dialogs. He has the privilege of interpreting for H.E. the Emperor & Empress of Japan and for almost all the Japanese and Indian Prime Ministers as well as Indian Presidents and Vice-Presidents since 2000.
He has trained many translators and interpreters during his over three decades of professional journey. The On-going Translation Training Program of CSIR-NISCAIR is an extension of this traditional one-to-one grooming mechanism. It is an organized Training-Program-by-Research with well-defined obligations. Though Japanese language remains the main stream, other languages were added and the coordinator aims at training 50 translators through this program.
